I was a bit dubious about the 2HW edition of High Rise To Hell (HRTH), however after acquiring a copy I was completely turned around. It is more of an adventure guide then a rule book. I'm not too keen on all the new ghouls but as Ed says you play the game. It's set in an office tower block and you can have a different adventure on each level.

Hence the new project. I see my FBI agent and his side kick investigating the block. A lot of action may occur in the lift/stair well. I can make the latter OK and I have an idea for the design of the lift. Now! I want the lift to work, I've purchased a few model boat pulley wheels but I'm struggling to design a jig system to make it go up/down. So has anyone out there got any ideas or a decent site I can get ideas from I'd be most appreciative.
Another reason for no game this week is that this Sunday is Mothers' Day in the UK, so I'm sorting that out for my Duchess and the Viscountess, the heirs are of no help!

Thanks, I forgot about Mothers day, I better get to the shops.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with thaT! ;-)
DeleteNaughty Shinto!
DeleteYour office block concept is awesome! Best of luck with this exciting new project, Bob.
ReplyDeleteCheers pal, you'll see the progress. Most is fairly straight forward, it is the lift stairs I want to get done as these are central to the theme. Well you've read it.
DeleteMy ears pricked up with the news of a new project! I do like the idea of an office block setting, sort of like a vertical dungeon from my D+D days. Knowing your imagination I suspect there will be a different mission on each floor, yet all linked together.
ReplyDeleteThat's exactly how I read it. As I said for my tastes it does require a bit of adaption. But with some old school DM'ing and my box of R and R cards I'm sure it'll pan out well.
DeleteThat sounds like a fantastic idea and a very ambitious one, as well.
ReplyDeleteYou could make the lift work with simply pulling a string to make it go up-down (kinda like anchor or those medieval gates), but I don't think it's worth the bother. It would look downright fantastic, though. Hmm...
Anyways, what I'd do is a separate board for every story (or, one board with all stories in the same level if you know what i mean - thats how I imagined my manor board to look like)
You'd have a board, say 2x3 and you'd divide it in three thirds of 1x2. First would be an outside yard, then ground and first floor - or something.
So you lose the stacking and there is no need to overthink it, while you have enough of internal space to really go big. When characters move around the floors, they just move in next part of the board.
But if every game is only played in one level, you could do it with one same board and just swap furniture around for modularity before each game.
Got what you're saying here and a good idea. Ed suggests that one concept is that all play takes place on a 12" x 12" surface or 9-12" x 12". I prefer the latter. This means I need nine squares and then have movable walls and doors. Then as one enters a room/office the action takes place on a separate 12 X 12 populated appropriately. This'll need lots of props but as most blocks are fairly standard it shouldn't be too onerous.
DeleteThat's foot by foot, right? Sounds doable. something like Space hulk/dungeon tiles. You should go for that!
DeleteSpot on Mathyoo!
DeleteSounds like your busier now than when you where working.
ReplyDeleteLove the idea of your office block project. Good luck with it.
Hmm, want to run that by the Viscountess? I'll be in Vegas when you do! :-)
DeleteSounds awesome could you not just have like pin that you put in between floors or are you after full functionality?
ReplyDeleteThe puzzle and the crafting is the thing my friend!
DeleteA working lift is a nice idea, but a bit twee imo and failry impractible in a game. It's not completely impossible though with small server motors and a simple pulley system (I've seen a large spaceship model (for use with Warhammer 40 - or Free Trader as I think it was called at the time) that used servers to open and shut all the doors and to raise a small platform. Whilst it was great as a novelty bit of eye-candy for a display game it slowed play down dramatically and added little to the gameplay.
ReplyDeleteIf you were building a 3D model of your building, I'd suggest lift off floors (with the liftshaft in each or course) and a seperate lift compartment that could sit on a small ledge within each floor of the shaft dependant upon which floor it was on.
Final thoughts - would lifts actually work for that long after an apocalypes.
Old lifts had a pair of "gates" (one on the lift and one on each floor) any one of which would halt the lift's operation if left open.
I'm also with Mathyoo in that it does sound very ambitious but it is doable - good luck with it.
I get what your saying but it is more for the challenge and the modelling. I don't foresee motors, maybe a Heath-Robinson bobbin if I go that far. Thanks for the advice though. We'll see how it goes.
DeleteI've not got HRTH myself - too many other things on the go - but I'm finding myself more and more pulled towards it.
ReplyDeleteAs for Mothering Sunday, I keep telling the wife and family that it's all a modern, invented, *crassly commercial* event. But despite all this, she still wants breakfast in bed &c :-) ...
That's the memsahib race for you. men are from Earth Women are from 'God knows Where!'
DeleteThe working lifts sounds Epic Bob, looking forward to seeing this progress
ReplyDeleteIm not sure if you know about this 1/72 zed range
